专辑介绍:
I just got this CD as a present and damn if it didn't have me logging on to Amazon.com doing a search for D'Angelo and crossing my fingers hoping that there would be a new release listed for him. I've seen "D" live more recently for the Voodoo album and he's EXCELLENT. I'm even more in awe by this live session because he was somewhat new to the scene. In my opinion the true talent of an artist is how well he or she performs live, having made that statement he's is truly talented much like Prince is so awesome live, so is Babyface, so is Me'shell NdegeOcello; get the picture. But I digress... buy this CD and I guarantee you it will stay in heavy rotation and you'll be logging onto Amazon.com hoping like I did.
Voodoo, the long-awaited sophomore album from D'Angelo, marks an ironic return for the dreamy-eyed soul crooner.
Before Brown Sugar, D'Angelo's 1995 debut, R&B was insufferable -- it possessed no brimming,
funky fire, no power-to-the-people charm and, well, no soul in its soul.
Then came D'Angelo, who made R&B new again precisely by making it old again,
conjuring up the spirits of icons such as Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield and ushering in a new black attitude.
But Lauryn Hill is queen now, and everyone from Macy Gray to Maxwell has capitalized on what Brown Sugar wrought;
yet because this album won't be the paradigm-shifting force that its predecessor was,
it probably won't get its fair shake, even by D'Angelo fans, and that's unfortunate,
since he's crafted another bit of wondrous magic.
Voodoo sounds like you're eavesdropping on a private studio jam session:
Each song clocks in at over five minutes; there are no obvious radio-friendly hooks;
and cuts blend lazily into one another.
While D'Angelo takes up more than just the keyboard on this album -- guitar and bass,
too -- it's his backing band, led by Roots' drummer ?uestove, that gives this album its consistent,
hip-hop feel.
It's an appropriate title for an album on which D'Angelo finds himself channeling all sorts of ghosts,
whether it's the sonic aura of Jimi Hendrix on the lazy opening cut "Player"
(Voodoo was recorded at Hendrix's Electric Ladyland studios),
the ubiquitous soul of Marvin Gaye on the old-school soul sensation "Great Day in Da Mornin',"
or the specter of Prince on the tribute cut "Untitled"
(which, in the spirit of "Nothing Compares 2 U," is the best Prince song the Artist hasn't made in over
a decade).
There's also D'Angelo's funky, sweltering cover of Roberta Flack and Donnie Hathaway's "Feel Like Makin' Love"
(a song Ms. Hill was supposed to duet on). D'Angelo's rugged charm and lover's croon makes each track his very own.
The biggest complaint of Voodoo might just be that the album has no real songs on it,
at least not compared to what most candy-fed listeners are used to nowadays. Yet, that's the point.
This is an album that's a spell: It hangs like a cloud in the air, ignites your senses, and slinks its way into your soul.
