50 cent（50分，以下称他为50分）的成长史可以说充满了艰辛与痛苦，他是在一个很多说唱歌手喜欢描写，但是并未亲身经历的环境中长大：毒品，犯罪，械斗，监狱以及枪杀，在他年纪尚幼时，生命中本该是最亲近他的东西一一离去，成人后渴望成名但是路途一波三折，即将见到曙光时却几乎丢掉性命。历经千锤百炼的“50分”直到2002年终于得到说唱界手遮半变天的痞子阿姆（Eminem）赏识，签约后在2003年获得了期待已久的成功。
50 cent原名科迪斯.杰克逊（Curtis Jackson），出生在纽约声名狼籍的贫民窟皇后区，生下来就几乎没见过父亲，而母亲是个贩毒的皮条客，在他8岁时就被莫名其妙卷入一场枪杀身亡，年幼的他在祖母家长大。打小他就在母亲影响下抢劫，既而贩毒，然后成为监狱的常客，直到90年代中期，“50分”把兴趣转向到了说唱。1996年，他遇到了Run-D.M.C的成员Jam Master Jay，他给了“50分”一盘录满节奏的磁带，然后让“50分”跟着节奏说唱。“50分”的表现给Jay留下了深刻的印象，随后将他带到了自己的JMJ公司。
但是“50分”却没有成功，于是他转而投靠在商业上获得巨大成就的说唱制作团队Trackmasters。在Trackmasters的帮忙下，“50分”与哥伦比亚唱片公司签定了合约，随后被关到纽约北部的一间录音室里，经过2个半礼拜后，他完成了36首歌曲，最终完成了第一张专辑《美圆的力量》（Power of the Dollar）。先行推出的三支单曲包括"Your Life\'s on the Line"、 "Thug Love" (与真命天子Destiny\'s Child合作)，以及 "How to Rob"。

有此二人协助自然顺风顺水。签约后的几个月里，“50分”在痞子阿姆和Dr. Dre的帮助下准备专辑《Get Rich or Die Tryin\'》，两位天皇巨星还各自操刀监制了专辑中的部分曲目，使得本来就颇受期待的专辑更加引人注目。在专辑完成之前，痞子阿姆就顺手提携了“50”一把，让其加入了自己主演的电影《8英里》原声专辑中，这首单曲"Wanksta" 在2002年底推出后大获成功，得到了公告牌第13名的好成绩；紧跟着就是Dr. Dre亲自操刀制作，专辑《Get Rich or Die Tryin\'》的首个单曲 "In da Club" ，结果一口气冲上了冠军宝座。随后， Interscope（Shady/Aftermath的母公司）开始正式发行《Get Rich or Die Tryin\'》专辑。
