Akon出生在非洲西部的塞内加尔，后随父母来到美国的新泽西定居。新泽西这片土地给了Akon创作hip-hop音乐的灵感，但也同是在这片土地上，Akon因偷车罪经历了三年的牢狱生活。
监狱生活中，Akon没有放弃对音乐的追求，把大部分时间用在了hip-hop音乐创作上，并终于在1996年6月29日发行了自己的第一张专辑TROUBLE。专辑以Akon的说唱为主，还融合了他特有的非洲风格骚灵嗓音，再加上东岸和南方典型的音乐节奏，使得专辑一经发行便受到了广大歌迷的欢迎。
TROUBLE连续获得英国榜2周冠军和R&B榜6周冠军，首支单曲“Lonely”也在英国冠军榜稳坐冠军宝座2周。Akon也被纽约时报誉为“塞内加尔的惊喜”。
